TIME TO STOP COMPLAINING AN DO SOMETHING

Now it’s time for everyone involved in broadcast journalism to get to work—staffer, supervisors & managers, news directors, promotions managers, general managers, educators, students, corporate executives, CEO’s, board members, stockholders, and yes, even viewers. Reading this book is a complete waste of time if you don’t get off your butt and do something. Remember, one of my biggest desires for this book is to get journalists to stop complaining and start working on solutions. Broadcast journalism is a great business to be a part of, but it takes the actions of great people to make it a vibrant and viable fourth estate.

TAKING ACTION TODAY

I hope to give you some practical things you can do today—the second you put this book down—to start you on the road to salvation, revival and reform. It doesn’t matter what you do or where you work, you can do something today to start fighting for journalism. Again, I suggest you take the simple, focused approach of internal/external marketing. Internally, you have to adopt the faith and idealism of a journalist. You may have to study the craft of journalism more or brush up on a few things. Once you begin to feel comfortable and confident and your self-esteem is higher, you can begin to externalize the journalistic values you have begun to learn. First, let’s talk about some quick ways to become a student of journalism again. Developing a little humility and studying your own craft is something that anyone, no matter what his or her position of influence or authority, can and should do. Second, we’ll talk about how you can begin to function as an ambassador with your growing journalistic knowledge. Lastly, we’ll look at various positions around the newsroom, the TV station, the corporation, and especially the ownership. We will look at the power that comes from each position and what each person in each of those positions can start doing today.
